Our Purpose

Mission Statement

"Our mission is to ensure the courage and sacrifice of Canada's Navy during the Atlantic convoys of the Second World War are never forgotten. Through education and outreach, we aim to bring these vital chapters of our history-such as the loss and heroism of HMCS Athabaskan-into Canadian classrooms. By working with educators, schools, and communities, we strive to make the stories of our sailors part of every student's understanding of Canada's role in preserving freedom, and to honour the survivors who carried these memories forward."

The Story of HMCS Athabaskan

"On April 29, 1944, HMCS Athabaskan was sunk in the English Channel. Of her 261 crew, 128 perished and 85 were taken prisoner. The survivors' stories remind us of the cost of freedom."

Atlantic Convoys: Canada's Lifeline of Freedom

"From September 1939 to May 1945, Canadian sailors escorted convoys across the Atlantic, defending supply lines that kept Britain alive. We are working to ensure their stories are taught in Canadian schools."
